MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Planning work is continuing on a memorial for a northwestern Indiana police officer who was fatally shot in September.

Money also is being raised to pay for the memorial that would honor Merrillville Officer Nickolaus Schultz.

Merrillville detective Joseph Cooper tells The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/13MutHr ) that Town Council members and a committee of officers have some ideas for the project, but nothing has been decided.

Police say the 24-year-old officer died two days after he was shot by a man wearing body armor who had broken into a condominium from which he had been evicted. The gunman then fatally shot himself. 

Schultz had been on the Merrillville police force for little more than a year after graduating from central Indiana's Franklin College.
