  • The proposal has been referred to a Michigan House committee for consideration.

LANSING, MICH. (WOWO) A group of Michigan House Democrats has introduced legislation that would require employers to provide seating for workers when their job duties can reasonably be performed while sitting.

Bill establishes workplace seating requirements

Under the proposed legislation, employers would be required to provide a suitable seat for employees whose work can be performed in a seated position.

The bill specifies that acceptable seating could include a chair, bench, or stool equipped with back support.

Seating required even when work must be performed standing

The proposal also addresses positions where employees must stand to complete their duties according to WILX.

In those situations, employers would be required to provide a seat nearby for workers to use during periods when they are not actively performing job-related tasks.

Worker protections included

The legislation would prohibit employers from disciplining, penalizing, or otherwise retaliating against employees for using seating provided under the law.

Supporters of the measure say it is intended to improve workplace conditions and employee comfort while maintaining productivity requirements.

Committee review ahead

The bill has been referred to the Michigan House Committee on Government Operations, where lawmakers will consider the proposal before any potential floor vote.

No timetable has been announced for further committee action.

The Takeaway

Workers could gain a right to workplace seating

The proposed legislation would require employers to provide suitable seats when employees can reasonably perform their duties while sitting.

Standing jobs would also be affected

Employers would have to make seating available nearby for workers whose jobs require standing but who have periods of inactivity.

Bill faces legislative review

The proposal has been assigned to the Michigan House Committee on Government Operations for consideration before advancing further in the legislative process.
