Nappanee Mayor to Retire

NAPPANEE, Ind. (AP): A northern Indiana mayor who led his city's recovery from severe 2007 tornado has decided that he'll step down after 20 years in office.

Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson says he won't seek re-election in 2015 when his fifth term in office ends.

The Republican hasn't had an opponent since he was first elected in 1995.

Thompson says proud of how quickly the 7,000-person city bounced back from the tornado without any federal assistance. The tornado destroyed 51 homes and damaged some 400 more homes and businesses.

Thompson says he'll concentrate on running his family's funeral home.
