The lead off
- More than 1 million Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles are being recalled due to a fire risk
- Officials say affected vehicles should be parked outside away from structures until repaired
- NHTSA reports dozens of fires and at least one injury linked to the issue
WASHINGTON DC. (WOWO) Federal safety officials are warning owners of more than one million Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles to park outside after a new recall was issued over a potential fire risk involving model year 2021 through 2025 vehicles.
Recall impacts more than 1 million vehicles
According to FCA US, the recall affects approximately 1,076,999 Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles nationwide.
Officials said the issue involves a possible electrical connection problem in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring.
Fire risk identified
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the defect could cause combustible materials to overheat, creating a potential fire hazard even when the vehicle is turned off.
NHTSA said it is aware of 51 vehicle fires and one reported injury connected to the issue.
As a result, officials are advising owners to park affected vehicles outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until repairs are completed.
Investigation and federal oversight
The recall follows an investigation opened by NHTSA after multiple reports of fires involving the affected vehicles.
Officials said the investigation helped identify the wiring issue as a likely cause of the incidents.
Repair timeline and notifications
FCA said owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning July 9.
The company said a final repair remedy is still under development.
Starting June 11, owners will be able to search vehicle identification numbers on NHTSA.gov to determine whether their vehicle is included in the recall.
