INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): An Indiana tax preparer says Obamacare and staffing shortages at the Internal Revenue Service are making this year‘s tax filing season a big challenge. Indianapolis-based Liberty Tax Service Spokesman Greg Carney says tax return filings are down right now compared to this time last year.
This comes as next week‘s Wednesday night – at midnight – mailing deadline quickly approaches. Carney says they expect to be super busy well into the night Wednesday.
He says Hoosiers who didn‘t have any health insurance in 2014 and didn‘t get coverage as required under Obamacare face maximum fines of $95 or one percent of their adjusted gross income.
Those who did receive insurance under the Affordable Care Act must file the 1095-A form. Carney says they cannot file their return without that form. He adds that IRS staffing shortages this year have meant only about 60% of calls to the IRS are answered.
