One dead in Elkhart County plane crash

GOSHEN, Ind. (WOWO): A pilot has died after a plane crash near the Goshen Municipal Airport.

Elkhart County Sheriff Jeff Siegel says the fatal wreck happened Thursday night near the intersection of County Road 42 and County Road 33.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, took off from Goshen Municipal Airport and was practicing maneuvers when witnesses said the plane nosedived into a field. Smoke and fire could be seen coming from the wreckage after it hit the ground.

WNDU reports the sheriff’s office secured the scene because the plane knocked down high-voltage power lines. As of about 10 p.m., an energized line was still in the field where the plane crashed.

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to investigate today.
