FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Not everyone is on board with the Fort Wayne Police Department’s decision to enforce the Indiana curfew law.
Police say it’s in response to a rash of violent crimes involving underage people. Pastor Carlton Lynch of New Beginnings Church tells WOWO news while he initially supported such a rule, he’s now second-guessing the approach:
“Since it was a law that was already on the books, we shouldn’t have made a big community issue out of it, we should’ve just enforced it, if need be,” he told Carly Butcher during Fort Wayne’s Morning News.
He also says he’s concerned the law will unfairly target “good kids” who have job schedules that would put them in violation of the law, which targets minors out and about between 11pm and 5am.
“You’ve got some good kids that are working, some that are playing sports, some that are just hanging out at friends’ homes, and you don’t want to punish the good kids.”
Minors caught violating the law will be apprehended and taken home or to juvenile detention. Repeat offenders could get their parents charged with neglect.
