INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Legal gun owners will be able to take their firearms with them to school parking lots in Indiana.
Gov. Mike Pence on Wednesday signed a bill into law to allow guns in school parking lots as long as they are locked in a vehicle and hidden from sight.
Students, unless they are members of a shooting club and have school permission, are not allowed to leave guns in their cars.
The measure spurred heated debate in the General Assembly.
Supporters say revising the law that previously banned guns on any school property will protect parents, who unknowingly were committing a felony by bringing their guns with them to pick up their children. Opponents argue easing gun restrictions around schools is dangerous and could make it easier for assailants to commit school shootings.
