MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ An Indianapolis organization has proposed creating a charter school at juvenile detention centers statewide. 

The (Munster) Times reported Monday that the proposal is before Ball State University's Office of Charter Schools. 

The idea behind CORE Academy is to help youth who are in or have just been released from juvenile detention facilities. 

If the university approves the charter school it could open next year at Lake County Juvenile Detention Center, Porter County Juvenile Detention Center and at Muskegon River Youth Home of Indiana near Crawfordsville.

Laurie Elliott, with Indianapolis-based Youth Law T.E.A.M., has helped with the proposal. She says the facilities would offer credit recovery and continued education.  

Elliot says she's spoken with judges overseeing juvenile divisions who have shown interest in the idea though nothing has been approved.
