INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Crews have begun constructing a new pedestrian plaza in front of the newly renovated Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum.

The project to create a landscaped area just north of the coliseum began last week. The landscaped area is designed to slow traffic in front of the building and provide outdoor space for special events.

The work is projected to cost $2 million. Of that, $1.6 million will come from a federal grant awarded through the Indiana Department of Transportation The state fair commission is covering the remainder of the expense.

The Indianapolis Star reports the project is expected to be completed in December, with landscaping to be finished next spring.

Indianapolis-based architecture firm Cripe designed the plaza, and 3D Co. of Muncie is the lead contractor.
