Sheriff’s Budget Battle

The budget battle between the sheriff’s department and the county council appears to be over with. You may remember, the sheriff came to the council with his annual budget, and they turned around and said he had to cut it. He was asking for 1.6 million dollars. The council gave suggestions to cuts, like reducing the number of officers on the road and the early release of inmates at the county jail. Sheriff Ken Fries met with them yesterday and presented a new budget that brings it down to a little better than 800 thousand. The budget guys say they discovered an additional 1 million dollars they will have and so the deep cuts to the department are not needed.
