South Bend Gas Leak Forces Evacuations

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Close to 100 people are being allowed back in their homes in South Bend following a natural gas leak near the University of Notre Dame campus.

WSBT-TV reports most of the affected residents are Notre Dame students.

They were evacuated Tuesday morning and told to go to the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus. They were out of their homes for several hours.

Fire officials say construction crew hit a gas line a few inches thick. They say the gas concentrations were low and the evacuations were a precautionary measure.

A Northern Indiana Public Service Co. spokesman says repairs on the line were expected to last into the evening.
