INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): The Indiana Department of Homeland Security says Hoosiers should always be prepared for the possibility of earthquakes.

IDHS Spokesman John Erickson says Indiana is taking part in the “Great Central U.S. Shakeout” drill Thursday morning at 10:15. Indiana is one of 14 states that are prepping for the potential hazards of an earthquake.

Erickson says the operative words to follow during an earthquake or tremor are “Drop, Cover and Hold On.” In other words, get someplace low, find cover beneath a desk or table and hold onto something sturdy for the average length of a tremor which is about one minute.

During that time, Erickson says folks should be thinking out how they might safely exit the structure following the quake. Scientists say Indiana will likely get a big earthquake at some point so it's best to be prepared.
