Student-Based Nonprofit Helping at National Park in Indiana

DUNE ACRES, Ind. (AP) _ Restoration and remediation efforts at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore have gotten a boost from Valparaiso University student volunteers and a $1 million donation.

The money from BP, which has an oil refinery in nearby Whiting, also will go to projects along the Calumet River in Illinois, where high school and college students are volunteering. The (Munster) Times reports that the Student Conservation Association is leading both of the environmental efforts.

Members of the nonprofit are working at the national park for eight weeks this summer, and then the projects will continue in the fall as part of a job-training program for military veterans.

The Student Conservation Association volunteers will displace invasive plants in a former wetland area that was drained.
