Toll Bridge Violators Could Face Hundreds in Fines

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — A prosecutor says he’s working with Indiana highway officials to crack down on drivers who disregard tolls on a bridge between Indiana and Illinois.

Posey County Prosecutor Travis Clowers tells the Evansville Courier & Press some offenders have accumulated hundreds of dollars in unpaid tolls. Clowers says motorists who don’t pay the toll are committing an infraction punishable by a fine of up to $220.

He says offenders have only been summoned to court after they have been sent multiple payment notices by certified mail.

Staffed toll booths were replaced with an automatic system in 2011. Motorists are supposed to set up an account from which tolls are deducted every time they cross the bridge.

Ten people are being summed to Posey County Traffic Court.
