SOUTH WHITLEY, Ind. (WOWO): Some South Whitley residents are now back in their homes after being evacuated last night due to a train derailment.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, the railroad crossings in town were closed after nine rail cars, including some tankers containing hazardous material, went off the rails at about 10:40 p.m. near the downtown area.

About a dozen homes had to be evacuated while cleanup took place. There’s currently no word on why the train derailed.
