PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): The Putnam County Sheriff is hoping to catch vandals who messed with a big part of Hoosier history. A newly rehabbed covered bridge was found with swastikas, and the words “Hail Satin,” like the fabric, on a covered bridge that was built in 1880.

Karla Lawless with the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau says she‘s upset that some don‘t have a greater respect for the rich history the county has to offer. The bridge reopened relatively recently after 1-point-7 million dollars in repairs.

The Putnam County Sheriff is asking the public for any information that could help them catch the vandals. There may be one clue on top of the bridge where a vandal wrote “Robert Loves Karen” but investigators are still looking for solid leads. Near the bridge, crews found racial slurs which they also worked to removed.

When the weather warms up, crews will be back out, ready to do a more thorough cleanup of the vandalized area.
