WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Police cars and fire trucks in West Lafayette are being stocked with a treatment for heroin overdoses, which are on the rise in the county.

The (Lafayette) Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1E86HS5 ) reports plans call for police and fire personnel to have access to naloxone by the end of this month.

The West Lafayette police chief says authorities didn't think they needed naloxone until earlier this year, when he says a Purdue University student overdosed.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt said earlier this year that heroin overdoses have gone up. The county sheriff hopes to equip personnel with naloxone.

Lafayette Police Chief Patrick Flannelly says there's no plan for officers there to have naloxone on them. He says paramedics have it and usually arrive about the same time as police.
