175 Laid Off at Sunrise Coal Mine in Carlisle

CARLISLE, Ind. (AP) _ A southwestern Indiana coal mine has laid off 175 employees.

Hallador Energy Co. announced the layoffs Monday at Sunrise Coal's mine in Carlisle, about 90 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

The Greene County Daily World reports some of the mine's approximately 290 employees are transferring to Sunrise's nearby Oaktown mine.

Denver-based Hallador, which owns Sunrise, says it has modified some of its supply contracts for customers who purchased too much coal amid mild weather this year and a glut of natural gas. It says it expects the Oaktown mine to produce more than 90 percent of Sunrise's coal for the next few years. Most of the coal is sold to the electric power generation industry.
