Indiana DNR Leads Recovery Effort After River Drowning

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WOWO)— Crews are continuing search and recovery operations along the East Fork of the White River after an 11-year-old girl drowned Tuesday evening.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the girl was with her family on a sandbar at Mill Race Park when she stepped into the water around 6:30 p.m. and was quickly pulled under by the current.

Officials say her father attempted to reach her, but she was carried away by the flow and did not resurface.

Search teams worked through the night before pausing due to darkness. Crews returned Wednesday and expanded operations using drones, boats, and divers as the effort transitioned from search to recovery, according to WISH-TV.

Authorities say operations are ongoing along the river as crews continue to work the area.
