BLS: Elkhart County Led Nation in Job Growth

GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) _ The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says a northern Indiana county that had the state’s highest unemployment rate four years ago led the nation in job growth between September 2011 and September 2012.

The Elkhart Truth reports Elkhart County’s job growth of 6.9 percent was the nation’s largest percentage increase.  The national growth rate was 1.6 percent.

The rebound was led by manufacturing, with 4,734 jobs added. Despite that, Elkhart County had an unemployment rate of 10.3 percent in January, up from 9.5 percent a month earlier. Some local officials dispute that.

The bureau’s report is a stark change from March 2009 when Elkhart County’s unemployment rate spiked to 18.9 percent and had the state’s highest unemployment rate for months.
