KOKOMO, Ind. (AP): Federal Emergency Management Agency teams are in Indiana assessing damage caused by recent flooding, which also claimed two lives.

Local, state and federal officials moved into Huntington, Grant and Tippecanoe on Friday to take a look at damage caused by severe weather that began April 17. Teams earlier finished evaluations of Madison and Wabash counties and were finishing work in Howard and Tipton counties.

FEMA staffers visited Kokomo on Thursday and found the number of homes affected by flooding has more than tripled from 100 to 350.

The damage assessments are a key part of the multi-step process to determine eligibility to pursue federal assistance. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security will provide the findings to the governor’s office, which will then decide whether to request federal assistance.
