Gary Police Look for Escapee, 2 Officers Injured

GARY, Ind. (AP) – Police in Gary say a man who had just been sentenced to a year in jail became violent, broke free from his handcuffs and escaped, injuring two officers.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports police were looking for 21-year-old Jamal Haskins after he escaped from the Public Safety Facility in Gary about 1:30 p.m. Central time Friday. Police say he broke free as he was being brought to a van to bring him to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point.
Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King says Haskins kicked one officer and shoved the other one down on the concrete. One injured his knee and the other had chest pain.  Both were taken to The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for treatment.
