Treasurer Charged with Defrauding Fire Department

GREENSBURG, Ind. (AP) – The treasurer of a volunteer fire department in southeastern Indiana turned herself in to police.  She faces accusations of defrauding the department of nearly $50,000.

Indiana State Police say 47-year-old Laurie L. Swegman of Greensburg surrendered Wednesday morning at the Decatur County Jail. She faces a preliminary charge of defrauding a financial institution. If convicted, she could face two to eight years in prison.

Investigators say Swegman transferred about $47,000 from the Adams Township Fire Department's bank account to the accounts of her and her children between August 2011 and October 2013.

Swegman was released on $30,000 bond.

There was no answer at the department or Swegman's home Wednesday when The Associated Press called seeking comment.
