3 Killed in I-65 Backup from Chemical Tanker Crash

ROSELAWN, Ind. (AP): State police say three people have been killed in a crash as traffic backed up on Interstate 65 from a chemical tanker rollover in rural northwestern Indiana.

Cpl. Dan Becker says those killed were in a vehicle that drove into the rear of a stopped semitrailer early Tuesday near the town of Roselawn, some 30 miles south of Gary.

That crash followed the rollover of a tanker carrying nitric acid a few miles further south.

Becker says hazardous materials crews are working to clean up a chemical leak from the tanker, but that no injuries or evacuations had been reported.

Police have closed all I-65 lanes for a 20-mile stretch between the Indiana 2 and Indiana 14 interchanges. Becker said he didn't know how long that closure would last.
