Vandals Cause Damage at SW Indiana Wildlife Refuge

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (AP) _ A southwestern Indiana wildlife refuge that's a popular stop for bird enthusiasts has been hit by vandals who damaged a bridge and other infrastructure.

Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge manager Bill McCoy tells the Princeton Daily Clarion a bridge, a kiosk and a sign were heavily marked with obscene images, racial slurs, spray-paint and other damage.

He says the vandalism occurred around Mother's Day but there aren't any leads on who caused the damage, which is the first vandalism at the refuge.

Dave Howell, the president of Friends of Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge, says the group is considering offering a $500 reward to help solve the vandalism case.

He says the damaged kiosk is one of about a dozen placed at strategic points throughout the refuge for visitors.
