INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has asked the Pence administration to resubmit its proposal for an alternative Medicaid expansion because its initial application didn't include input from a band of Potawatomi Indians.
CMS returned the state's proposal last month, just two weeks after it had submitted the plan with much fanfare. Federal officials wrote that they could not begin their formal review until Indiana consulted the tribe.
Family and Social Services Administration spokesman Jim Gavin says CMS had previously told the state it wasn't required to consult the tribe.
Republican Gov. Mike Pence wants to use a version of the state-run Healthy Indiana Plan to expand Medicaid coverage. He met last week with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell to discuss the waiver request.
