Terre Haute Man Arrested in Cannonball Theft

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – A 28-year-old Indiana man has been arrested in connection with the theft of artifacts from a historical monument.

The Tribune-Star reports that Jack Daniel Atkers of Terre Haute turned himself in to police Wednesday on a theft charge. Police say he also gave them cannonballs that were missing from a Wabash Valley monument.

The cannonballs and a cannon were stolen on July 30. The monument honors the people who defended Fort Harrison before the War of 1812.

The missing cannon was discovered last Friday near the Cannon Inn.

Atkers appeared in court Thursday and will return for another hearing next week. He is being held in the Virgo County Jail.

Court records didn't indicate Atkers has an attorney.
