Senate Leader Urges Quick Action on Gay Marriage

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The leader of Indiana's Senate says he hopes the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the issue of gay marriage bans quickly to clear up “chaos and uncertainty'' created by federal court rulings on the issue.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long says he isn't surprised that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a federal judge's ruling declaring Indiana's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. But he says he still believes the issue should be decided state by state.

Indiana lawmakers have pushed to place the ban on same-sex marriage in the state constitution. But a vote to change the language of the amendment during this year's legislative session will keep the issue off the November ballot.
