Judge Hears Arguments on Indiana Abortion Law

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A federal judge is weighing arguments in the legal battle over an Indiana law opponents say is aimed at shuttering a Planned Parenthood clinic in Lafayette.

U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson heard arguments Thursday from the state and the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana about the law she's blocked from taking effect.

The law would require a Lafayette clinic that only performs drug-induced abortions to either stop offering those medications or upgrade its offices to the same building standards as surgical abortion clinics.

The Indianapolis Star reports ACLU of Indiana legal director Ken Falk argued the law would force unnecessary costs for rooms that wouldn't be used.

State attorneys say the law might require some women to travel farther to obtain an abortion, but that's not illegal.
