Judge Weighs Fate of Student’s Convicted Killer

Attorneys for Michael Dean Overstreet and the state have filed their final arguments on whether Overstreet is competent to be executed.

St. Joseph County Judge Jane Woodward Miller presided over a four-day hearing where she heard testimony from doctors and prison mental health workers.

The Daily Journal reports Miller has until Dec. 5 to decide whether Overstreet is competent to be executed.

Overstreet received the death sentence in 2000 after being convicted of raping and killing 18-year-old Kelly Eckart of Boggstown in September 1997. The Franklin College student was found strangled in a ravine in Brown County with a bullet wound in her head.
