GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana's state schools superintendent says she expects a push in next year's legislative session to allow state takeovers of what are determined to be failing school districts.
Democratic superintendent Glenda Ritz told Gary School Board members that she believed the Republican-dominated Legislature could extend the State Board of Education's current authority to take over individual schools.
Ritz has opposed the state takeover of schools under which they've been turned over to private operators. That has been among the issues over which she's clashed with the education board made up of Republican Gov. Mike Pence's appointees.
Board of Education executive Bob Guffin tells the Post-Tribune that the panel is expected to discuss recommended legislation during its Dec. 3 meeting.
