LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Fraternities at Purdue University have voted to ban hard liquor.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/1ArQHuA ) that the school's Interfraternity Council had the vote on Tuesday. It's the governing body for 42 fraternities at the school. Hard liquor already was banned from registered fraternity chapter events. The new policy prohibits all beverages with 15 percent alcohol content from being consumed on fraternity property.

Punishment for a first offense could be 16 weeks of social probation, a $1,000 fine and mandatory education programming.
