ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – A developer who fought for 37 years to build a landfill outside the central Indiana city of Anderson has dropped its efforts.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says an application to renew the landfill permit for property near Mallard Lake was withdrawn last week.

Bex Farms Inc., which owned the 254-acre site, and its affiliate, 600 Land Inc., had sought to open a landfill on 13 acres there.

Company spokesman Andy Drummond tells The Herald Bulletin (http://bit.ly/17JqBZI ) it was “highly unlikely'' the property would be used as a landfill, so it wasn't in the company's best interests to commit “significant resources that would be necessary to renew the permit.''

Landfill opponent Bill Kutschera of the Killbuck Concerned Citizens Association says the landfill is now just “an ugly memory.''
