New Haven Mayor responds to beating of black teen

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WOWO): The Mayor of New Haven is speaking out about an allegedly racially-charged beating of a black teen.

The NAACP in Fort Wayne is asking for a federal investigation into the assault of Jason Gardner, who told our Partners in News at ABC 21 he had been ambushed last week near a creek on the west side of town by a group of white youth, who beat him and used racial slurs, all apparently over a failed dating relationship.

Now Mayor Terry McDonald says he’s “troubled” about the situation, saying the city won’t tolerate any form of racism and adding that New Haven Police are “actively engaged” in the investigation.

The Allen County Prosecutor’s office is looking into battery charges against at least one juvenile, who was identified by Gardner.
