Man Charged in Woman’s Shooting Death in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman found outside of a government building in Indianapolis.

William Smith is accused in the death of 20-year-old Azya Knowles. She was discovered by police on Feb. 11 inside a bullet-riddled vehicle near the front doors of the City-County Building. She died two days later at a hospital.

Smith originally told police he and Knowles had been shot at while driving on the Near Westside. But investigators believe Smith shot Knowles inside the vehicle and then drove to the City-County Building.

Court documents show Smith's story was inconsistent with physical evidence found on the vehicle and at the scene of the alleged shooting.

It wasn't immediately known if Smith has an attorney yet.
