INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Proposed regulations for the liquids used in electronic cigarettes are moving ahead in the Legislature without including the practice known as “vaping'' in the statewide smoking ban.

The Senate Public Policy Committee voted 9-0 Wednesday to endorse the bill that the House approved by a wide margin last month.

Bill sponsor Representative Kevin Mahan of Hartford City says the e-cigarette liquids currently face no state or federal regulations. The bill would establish manufacturing safety standards and prohibit sales to those younger than 18.

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller and several health advocacy groups say that allowing “vaping'' in public places sends the wrong message to youths and exposes people to unknown dangers from secondhand vapors.

Mahan says many lawmakers are reluctant to include e-cigarettes in the smoking ban.
