Akron Officer Indicted for Assault Outside Charity Event

CLEVELAND (AP) – A rookie Akron police officer has been indicted for an assault outside a Cleveland hotel after a police charity event last month.

Twenty-eight-year-old Adam Campbell was indicted on one count of felonious assault Thursday in Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County. The Akron police department has placed Campbell on unpaid leave.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports (http://bit.ly/1DqQOIh ) that Campbell is accused of attacking a man March 29 after a Cleveland police scholarship fundraiser and that the victim suffered six broken ribs and a fractured hip.

One of Campbell's attorneys told the media group the other man attacked Campbell first and that two other men caused the most serious injuries. A Cleveland detective told a judge on Thursday that Campbell was the main aggressor.
