Health Emergency Extended in Scott County

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WOWO): The health emergency in Scott County has been extended.

Governor Mike Pence signed an executive order that continues a state directed multi-agency effort. The order was originally issued March 26.

In March, the Centers for Disease Control recommended local officials implement  ISDH a targeted, short-term needle exchange program to contain the epidemic.

The ISDH launched a public awareness campaign that included drug treatment, infection prevention, safe sex, needle disposal and HIV testing.

Last week, the Indiana Department of Health confirmed 128 cases of HIV and six preliminary cases. The cases are linked to injection drug use.

According to a statement from the governor's office, typically fewer than five HIV cases are reported in that county every year.
