COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ The state auditor is recommending Ohio's prison system collect data on its fleet of hundreds of vehicles as a way to cut costs.

Auditor David Yost says the agency should study vehicle mileage and use, maintenance and repair expenses, and fuel use and expenses.

Yost also recommends the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction put in place a system that allows the agency to continually track vehicle use.

Yost says a real-time data tracking system could save the agency about $200,000 a year as it studies mileage, fuel and maintenance costs and engine hours.

The prisons department has about 1,200 vehicles, most of which are cars, vans, pickup trucks and minivans.
