INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Authorities in central Indiana are warning people about a scam in which people get a phone call from someone demanding payment to avoid a warrant or arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office and Marion County Sheriff's Office issued a consumer alert Tuesday regarding the scam. The officials say a legitimate notice for jury or grand jury duty in Marion County is an official court summons delivered by mail. Law enforcement officials will not contact individuals by phone requesting payment or personal information to avoid a warrant or arrest.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry warned that the fraudulent calls are an attempt by criminals to confuse and scam individuals using fear tactics.
