EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ An Evansville man accused of setting a fire at his apartment complex and leaving a bomb near a fast food restaurant will receive a psychiatric examination to determine whether he's competent to stand trial.
The attorney representing 25-year-old Caleb Loving also has filed notice that he'll seek a defense of mental disease or defect.
A hearing officer granted public defender Stephen Owen's motion for the psychiatric examination during a hearing Monday.
Loving faces charges of possession of an explosive device, arson, criminal recklessness and false informing. He was arrested July 23 following the fire that damaged two apartments and the discovery of a pipe bomb and Molotov cocktail near the restaurant.
Loving is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail in Evansville.
His next hearing is set for Jan. 6.
