HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) _ A judge has given a one-day sentence to a northwestern Indiana woman who admitted leaving her newborn baby to die on a cruise ship.
U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano on Wednesday sentenced 24-year-old Alicia Keir of DeMotte to one day in prison and granted her credit for serving the sentence. She must also serve two years on supervised release.
The Post-Tribune reports (http://trib.in/1hXW7Z5 ) federal sentencing guidelines recommended a minimum of 33 months.
Kerr pleaded guilty in May to involuntary manslaughter. She admitted giving birth during an October 2011 Caribbean cruise, never summoned medical help and wrapped the child in a towel and placed her under her bed. A cleaning crew found the body.
An autopsy determined the child was full term when born and could have lived with proper care.
