INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana's high school diplomas could be changing.
The State's Commission for Higher Education voted to approve changes in requirements for graduation. It moves ahead to the the State Board of Education and General Assembly.
Officials say they want to make the diploma's more challenging and set clear expectations for college and career readiness. Adding, to prepare students for the next stage of their life.
Credit hours would jump by 4 to 44, it also requires four years of math for academic diplomas. Career focused diplomas would include course work in financial literacy and a combination of internships, technical education and college coursework.
The changes approved today by the commission are the culmination of more than a year of discussion and work by a group comprised of K-12, business and higher education stakeholders as well as input gathered from the public.
The changes, if approved by would take effect for students entering high school in 2018.
