Woman critically hurt after SUV slams into Indianapolis shop

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indianapolis police say a sandwich shop employee has been critically injured after a motorist drove her SUV into the business.

Police say the worker had to be extricated from the wreckage inside Greiner’s SubShop on the city’s south side and was taken to a hospital in critical condition Friday morning.

Police say the driver of the SUV, 41-year-old Deana Shumaker of Indianapolis, has been charged with criminal recklessness.

Capt. Rick Riddle says investigators believed Shumaker had some of “mental episode” that led her to believe she needed to drive her vehicle into the business to protect people.

He says Shumaker was apprehended at a nearby service station.

Shumaker was incarcerated at the Marion County Jail. It wasn’t clear whether she had an attorney who might comment on her behalf.
