FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Community Harvest will never forget what Jane Avery did for the food bank. Now, the community won’t forget her.
The food bank is renaming its Tillman Road facility to “The Jane Avery Distribution Center” in honor of the late Avery, who spent 19 years as Community Harvest’s executive director.
Avery died in July 2015 after a fight with brain cancer.
During her time as director, the food bank grew to distribute about 13 million pounds of food every year to more than 90,000 people.
Mayor Tom Henry awarded Avery with the Key to the Fort in 2011 and Gov. Mike Pence awarded her the 2015 Sagamore of Wabash for her service.
“I had the privilege of working with Jane for 14 years,” said Carmen Griffith, Community Harvest president. “She was a truly warm and genuine woman, and I am so honored to celebrate her legacy.”
The dedication ceremony is at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at 999 E. Tillman Road in Fort Wayne.
