Coroner releases findings in Steve McElvene’s death

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): We now know why a local basketball standout died earlier this year.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office says 20-year-old Steve McElvene died from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, meaning he had an enlarged heart.

The New Haven graduate, who also played for the University of Dayton, collapsed at his home on May 12.

The 6-foot-11-inch star had set a single-season block record in Dayton and averaged 17 points per game for New Haven, winning two Northeast Hoosier Conference titles in the process.
