OSSIAN, Ind. (WOWO): An Ossian man is now facing murder charges after police were called to help with an unresponsive toddler last week.

The Wells County Prosecutor tells WOWO News 27-year-old Brent Scheiber is charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and aggravated battery over an incident that happened on January 7th.

Emergency crews had been called to a home on Greenwood trail after Scheiber reported the 18-month-old girl had fallen out of her crib and wasn’t breathing properly. She died five days later at an area hospital.

Doctors found she had a skull fracture, with an injury to her head roughly the size and shape of a fist, and found that her injuries were not consistent with a fall. The child’s death was ruled a homicide.

Police searched the home and found possible bloodstains on the carpet, a child’s pillow, a crib sheet and a diaper. Scheiber also told police the child, who he described as “clumsy,” disliked him.

His relationship to the child was not disclosed by police.
