MERCER COUNTY, Ohio (WOWO) – The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about a potential scam circulating the area.

Deputies were recently contacted by an individual who reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a “Deputy Sheriff,” and advised the person there was a warrant for his arrest.

The caller instructed the individual to go to the Sheriff’s Office and place money inside the kiosk using their own name.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office does not phone people regarding warrants, nor request money. Warrants can be checked on the Sheriff’s Office website, www.mercercountysheriff.org.

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey also urges caution when dealing with individuals on the phone, as phone numbers can be spoofed to appear like they’re calling from a local area code.
