Act of kindness at a Fort Wayne gas station goes viral

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): An act of kindness at a Fort Wayne gas station caught on video and posted on Facebook has gone viral.

The video a Fort Wayne woman posted has been shared more than 2,000 times and viewed more than 107,000 times.

Kameron Handshy said she was at a Fort Wayne Marathon gas station when she saw an elderly woman approach a serviceman across the parking lot.

The serviceman, later identified as Specialist Michael Matthew Gish, then inspected the woman’s tires and began to fill them with air.

“I started recording when I realized that she must have asked him for help,” Handshy told WOWO. “I thought his actions were very kind and selfless and likely heroic to this woman. So many stories on Facebook and social media are negative, so I decided to share this in hopes that the kindness would inspire others to act kindly when an opportunity arises.”

Since the post went viral, the elderly woman’s granddaughter contacted Handshy for help identifying the man. The granddaughter has since thanked Gish personally.

Specialist Gish said he was running late for drill when the elderly woman came up to him and asked for help.

“She had recently hurt her wrist and couldn’t really do it,” Gish said. “So I automatically agreed because I just felt that anyone else in the same situation would do the same thing. I wasn’t just going to leave her in the cold to fend for herself.”

Specialist Gish, 22, is a combat engineer in the Indiana Army National Guard.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit. And it’s not just our Troops (God Bless ‘Em!) who help like this.
